Text Box: Notes from the Show: Octavia and the Earthblood Blues Band By JEREMIAH EISLEY Sun-Gazette Correspondent Text Box: On the evening of April 9, Octavia and the Earthblood Blues Band brought a relieving heat wave to downtown amidst the surprisingly cold interruption to the warm we’ve all recently felt. Octavia’s proclamation of the blues made mercury rise inside the Bullfrog Brewery, 229 W. Fourth St., and brought a common sense of personal experience combined with blues chords and harmonic harmonicas. Speaking of harmonicas, I believe it necessary to mention Octavia’s masterful proficiency with the instrument. Typically, I think of a harmonica as an accompanying instrument, something to fill in when necessary and to sort of add to an already established tone in the music. However, when Octavia played her harmonicas, sometimes two at the same time, her instrument spoke with a voice of its own. It was like watching and listening to a vocal duet, Octavia’s voice, emotion and personality alongside with those of a harmonica. Octavia’s gift at the art of the harmonica certainly doesn’t go unnoticed ; she has already been noted as “top of the list of the very few female harmonica players in the blues world”. The Earthblood Blues Band has collaborated with Octavia for live performances as well as studio recordings. There certainly couldn’t be a better group of musicians to back such an artist. Their rhythm is raw and their musical appetite is insatiable. Throughout the performance, the EBB soared higher and higher, pushing the limits the whole way up. Their name reflects their style. But what really set Octavia and the Earthblood Blues Band apart from the other blues artists that I’ve seen? Well, while sitting there at my table I wasn’t too sure myself, but there was something. It could have been her amazing interaction with the audience; during a set she took her microphone and went out amongst the crowd, singing and trying to seduce anyone in her path (she tickled my neck with her fingertips). But I know there must be something else. I honestly don’t know, maybe some things in music are just beyond rhyme and reason. I suppose everything cannot be summed up in a mathematical formula or a proportional comparison.
